Tasmanian Devil Myth
They say that the Tasmanian devil has the strongest, most powerful bite out of all the mammals. Well, is it true? Does the Tasmanian devil have that force?
Well, the fact is, the Tasmanian devil does NOT have the strongest bite. There are many mammals in the world which hold a stronger bite than the Tasmanian devil. The myth comes from misreading the numbers in the study conducted on the Tasmanian devil and the other mammals. People tend to read the BFQ (or Bite Fore Ratio, This value is given as CBS (N) / BoM (kg) = BFQ, or Bite Force divided by Body Mass equals Bite Force Quotient) and assume that the Tasmanian devil has the strongest bite. BFQ simply means, bite force divided by the MASS of the animal. The Tasmanian devil definitely has a strong bite, however, its force is great only compared to how small it is.
Tasmanian devil has a bite force ratio (BFR) of 181.The African lion has a BFR of 112, and the Jaguar at 137. The truth is, the lion and the jaguar both have a stronger bite, but the study shows the numbers by BODY MASS to BITE FORCE ratio.
Myth: The Tasmanian devil holds the strongest bite out of all of the mammals.
Truth: The Tasmanian devil holds the strongest bite by RATIO.
